Story and Symbolism

Because of her battle against sexual sins, Saint Maria Goretti is recognized as one of the youngest saints to be canonized, and as an Italian virgin-martyr of the Catholic Church. On April 27, 1947, Pope Pius XII beatified her in Saint Peter's Basilica at a ceremony in the Basilica and remembered her most important story in which she forgave her rapist, stretching beyond her death.
