Story & Symbolism: 

Martin was ridiculed for being of mixed race. In Peru, by law, all descendants of African or Indians cannot be a member of religious orders. He volunteered and was later accepted by the Dominican Convent of the Rosary in Lima as a servant boy and eventually was moved up. Martin become a Dominican lay brother and was in charge of the infirmary until his death. By the time he died, he became popular and talks of his miracles and taking care of the sick were everywhere. His body was exhumed 25 years later, his body had a rich fragrance and is still intact. He was canonized by Pope John XXIII on May 6, 1962.
